The Japantown Peace Plaza is a great place to rest your feet after exploring the neighborhood.
There are benches to sit down on and greenery to admire. However, the main attraction is the Peace Pagoda, which has stood in the plaza since 1968. The Peace Plaza is currently undergoing renovations, which are scheduled for completion in late 2025 or early 2026.
Located in one of only three Japantowns left in the United States, the Japantown Peace Plaza houses the iconic 5-tiered Peace Pagoda and is nestled among a multitude of delicious foods and fun shops. – Leigh Hiura
The five-tier Peace Plaza was created and gifted to San Francisco in the mid-1960s by Osaka, San Francisco’s sister city in Japan. It was inspired by a series of pagodas that exists in the Japanese city of Nara and is a symbol of goodwill and friendship.
