Reflecting on the birth of the SF Parks Alliance

SFPA Executive Director Matt O'Grady recently wrote a guest post for the Olive Grove nonprofit leadership blog, reflecting on the birth of the SF Parks Alliance through the merger of the San Francisco Parks Trust and Neighborhood Parks Council in October 2011. Each organization was well-regarded and effective in its own way, but Matt describes how the merger has brought about one unified, stronger voice for parks in San Francisco.

Uniform park closures approved by City supervisors

As expected, City supervisors voted 6-5 on November 19 to approve changes to the City's park code instituting overnight park closures citywide. Parks will be closed between midnight at 5 a.m. once the legislation takes effect -- 30 days after it is signed into law by Mayor Ed Lee.

Press: Upgraded Palega Park reopens

The beautifully refurbished Palega Recreation Center re-opened Saturday in a joyful celebration attended by hundreds of neighborhood residents. The San Francisco Parks Alliance's Gear Up partnership with the Recreation & Parks Department provided $40,000 to outfit the new rec center; since 2000 Gear Up has provided over $500,000 to outfit and furnish new recreation centers after bond upgrades.
