Tank Hill

What Tank Hill might lack in size, it more than makes up for in sweeping views.

Take a short hike up to the peak and you’ll be rewarded with beautiful views of the bay, downtown San Francisco, and even Oakland and Berkeley! Perfect for those seeking peace and quiet, this park is notable for its lack of heavy foot traffic even on warmer days.

  • Established in 1977, Tank Hill is named for the water tank that stood there in the 1890s. While the water tank was removed in the 1950s (residents remember seeing goldfish swimming down Belgrave Avenue when they drained it!), this hidden gem retains the “tank” in its name as a nod to the hill’s past.

  • In 2001, SF Parks Alliance supported the Tank Hill Restoration Project, which began to clear the hill of its mature eucalyptus trees in order to improve the environment for native plants. Some local neighbors didn’t approve of removing the eucalyptus trees, and a compromise was made which protected the remaining trees until newly planted native trees reached an adequate size. There were also plans to replace the stumps of cleared trees with a fence. In the end, saplings were planted, the remaining eucalyptus trees remained, and the fence was built (and subsequently mostly removed). A separate project has replaced the staircase and trail that leads to the summit of Tank Hill.
