Membership Officer (Job Description)

At the SF Parks Alliance, we work with more than 200 partner organizations, city agencies, and engaged citizens to ensure that our treasured city parks and green open spaces thrive in communities throughout San Francisco. As we expand to serve even more parks and people, we are seeking a Membership Officer to join our team. Position Summary:
Our membership program is growing. As the Membership Officer, you have the unique opportunity to shape the program for highest impact and engagement. As an integral member of the fund development team and working cross departmentally with the programs and communications/marketing teams, the Membership Officer is responsible for growing existing member base and acquiring new donors (up to $1,000) through outward facing communications campaigns and park events. In your role, you will work to ensure that Parks Alliance members have a consistent membership experience by providing excellent customer service and seamless membership fulfillment. You are a self-starter, who thrives in building relationship (both with internal and external stakeholders) while driving results based on data driven decisions. The Membership Officer will work to create and implement an overarching annual plan encompassing all membership activities for the organization, working across departments of the organization and being a champion for the program and its integration with all organizational offerings. 

Job Description:
Reports to: Director of Development
Status: Full-time/Exempt
Schedule: regular workday business hours, including evening and weekends for scheduled membership and development events

Summary of Essential Job Functions:

Membership program strategy and management (70%)

  • Develop and implement strategies for comprehensive member engagement; drive member benefits ideation and execution for growth and retention
  • Plan and manage all aspects of renewal, new acquisition, existing recruitment, and appeal campaigns for both digital and mail appeals
  • Conduct analysis and provide regular updates to development team, leadership team, and board members
  • Vet lists across departments and collaborate with the development operations point contact on data strategy decisions
  • Aligning with development plan and strategy, create and execute tailored cultivation and stewardship events including establishing objectives, determining invitees, identifying event features, lead in all aspects of planning and producing events as well as planning and conducting post-event follow up 
  • Work closely with development team to identify opportunities for moving members to higher giving levels 
  • Be the program face and represent the Parks Alliance at public outreach and engagement events
  • Be an internal champion for the program and liaise with all departments and board to achieve holistic view for members
  • Ensure consistency, quality, and timeliness of all communications with members and prospects 

Program administration (20%)

  • Prepare and manage membership program budgets 
  • Manage and maintain revenue and retention reports for membership campaigns
  • Attend regular meetings with development department and other departments as appropriate
  • Manage membership renewal series
  • Use research, surveys, ongoing analysis and metrics, as appropriate, to chart progress and regularly evaluate and strengthen programs

Other (10%)

  • Stay current on industry and local trends and market competition
  • Supervise volunteers, as needed
  • Other duties, as assigned

Experience and Qualifications
Experience and demonstrated success in social impact organization to include:

  • Track record of building and growing a flourishing membership program in a fast-paced environment for at least 3 years
  • Demonstrated experience in cultivating new and stewarding existing members
  • Collaborating across departments and with outside contractors, vendors and partners to achieve desired outcomes
  • Managing multi-phase projects from inception to completion and balancing
    concurrent priorities 
  • Solving problems creatively and strategically and using research and data analysis to make recommendations and program changes
  • Working with fundraising database programs (familiarity with Raiser’s Edge/Luminate and/or other CRM system preferred) as well as Microsoft Office Suite and other standard office software
  • Excellent demonstrated writing and oral presentation skills
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Passion for urban parks and for inspiring members to come out and explore them

  • Plan to participate in and support fundraising, programmatic, cultivation and stewardship events and activities as a member of the Development team on evenings and weekends as required
  • Must be able to engage in a range of physical activity, including standing or sitting at a desk or computer and walking (sometimes on uneven surfaces) for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to climb a flight of stairs and lift/carry up to 25 pounds
