Uniform park closures approved by City supervisors

As expected, City supervisors voted 6-5 on November 19 to approve changes to the City's park code instituting overnight park closures citywide. Parks will be closed between midnight at 5 a.m. once the legislation takes effect -- 30 days after it is signed into law by Mayor Ed Lee.

Supervisor Scott Wiener sponsored this legislation to address widespread vandalism and dumping in City parks -- Recreation & Parks General Manager Phil Ginsburg estimates that the department spends almost $1 million a year addressing these problems. Most major cities--New York, Seattle and Berkeley were frequently cited as examples--already have similar overnight closures.
