About

Friends of Oak Woodlands began as a grassroots environmental group over 20 years ago. Today, the group is a supported organization through the SF Recreation & Park Department’s Natural Resource Division, and a Community Partner of the San Francisco Parks Alliance.

The group’s ongoing mission is the advocacy and development of resources for the restoration and stewardship of the Oak Woodlands Natural Resource Area, located in the northeast portion of Golden Gate Park. This includes the recently upgraded trail network and the historic Horseshoe Courts.

The Friends of Oak Woodlands contribute to the biodiversity and beauty of San Francisco’s flagship park by promoting habitat for native plants and wildlife.

Volunteers make a difference for the Oak Woodlands! –

  • 400+ native plants and shrubs installed by our Community Challenge Grant project, completed in 2021
  • 200+ hours of stewardship including weeding, watering, and litter cleanup in the first quarter of 2022

Get Involved

The Friends of Oak Woodlands invite you to join them for their monthly habitat restoration work parties! The group meets at the Horseshoe Courts entrance on East Conservatory Drive in Golden Gate Park, on the second Saturday of each month at 9:30AM.

Other volunteer opportunities are also available! For more info, please reach out to Rob Bakewell at 415-710-9617, or through email at rcbakewell@friendsofoakwoodlands.org

Short on time but still want to help? Please consider a gift to the Friends of Oak Woodlands. They are currently raising funds to purchase native trees and shrubs, as well as tools to continue the rejuvenation and conservation of San Francisco’s remnant woodland groves.

What SF Parks Alliance Loves

This group’s dedication and hard work led to the restoration of the Oak Woodlands Grove – much to the amazement and joy of San Francisco residents and visitors alike!
