The Hidden Garden Steps project is a volunteer-driven, community-based effort to create and maintain the second set of ceramic-tiled steps and public gardens in San Francisco’s Inner Sunset district, while strengthening the existing sense of community in the neighborhood.

The original 16th Avenue Tiled Steps are two very long blocks south of the Hidden Garden Steps, located on Moraga Street, between 15th and 16th Avenues. This project was completed in 2013, under the auspices of the San Francisco Parks Alliance and the San Francisco Department of Public Works Street Parks Program, and remains a Street Parks Project.

Friends of the Hidden Garden Steps is the informal group of volunteers who are committed to maintaining the Steps and their adjacent gardens.

Volunteers generally meet for clean-up and planting days on the second Saturday of each month from 1PM to 3PM, weather permitting.

New and returning volunteers are welcome to join the group for monthly clean-ups and plantings.

Volunteers do not have to arrive right at 1PM or stay until 3PM, as any time and energy offered is welcome and appreciated.

Feel free to bring your own gloves and tools, and if you let the group know in advance that you are joining, they can supply tools and gloves.

Plant donations – with a strong preference for California natives, succulents, and other drought-tolerant plants – are always welcome on these volunteer days.

Updates are also occasionally posted on the Friends of the Hidden Garden Steps website, and on the group’s Youtube channel.

Friends of the Hidden Garden Steps is a wonderful group that undertook a significant campaign, completed an extensive tiled stairway project, and managed to sustain ongoing maintenance and community engagement. We love how they also generously share their knowledge and support other partners interested in tiled stairway projects!
