By cultivating school gardens in San Francisco’s under-served neighborhoods, Urban Sprouts partners with youth and their families to build eco-literacy, equity, wellness, and community.
Urban Sprouts partners with four San Francisco middle and high schools, reaching over 500 students each year through classroom, after-school and summer programming. Urban Sprouts has taught over 6,750 youths to grow, prepare, and enjoy their own fresh organic fruits and vegetables since 2003. Our research-tested garden-based programming positively impacts food choices, and inspires students to take action to protect the enviornment.
Urban Sprouts works in the neighborhoods where students live to build linkages between school gardens and the larger community, broaden impacts, and to reinforce the positive outcomes of Urban Sprouts' acedemic programming. We reach over 1,00 individuals and families annually through bilingual (Spanish and English) programming that includes nutrition education, culturally-appropriate cooking classes, exploration of healthy lifestyles, and support to allow individuals to take action to improve food access and enviornmental justice in their communities.
